Struggling with Dull, Dry Skin This Winter? Try These Tips to Reclaim Your Glow.

Grey skies, bare trees and rougher seas - winter is here in all her glory! Just as nature responds to the changing seasons, so does your skin. Harsh winter conditions can leave our skin looking and feeling very lacklustre, but implementing a few simple changes to your daily habits and skincare routine can make all the difference in maintaining a healthy, hydrated complexion all year round.

How Winter Affects Your Skin

Rainy winter days fool us into thinking there’s more moisture in the air, but did you know winter air usually has less humidity?

The combination of dry winter air, cold winds and indoor heating dehydrate the outermost layer of your skin (the epidermis), resulting in dryness, dullness, flakiness, redness, fine lines or crepey-looking skin. This is called transepidermal water loss - a process where our skin loses moisture to the surrounding environment. Transepidermal water loss accelerates in dry conditions, and the dryer our skin becomes, the more difficult it is to replenish the lost moisture.

That’s why it’s so important to stay on top of caring for your skin through the winter months. We’ve shared some tips below to help you get started.

Tip #1: Stay Hydrated

You may want to drink less water as the temperature drops (and you’re sweating less), but staying hydrated on the inside is key to maintaining soft and supple skin. So be sure to keep your water intake up!

Tip #2: Cool It on the Hot Showers

We know, we know - give up steamy hot showers on chilly winter nights? You’ve got to be kidding. But seriously, hot showers are one of the quickest ways to zap moisture from your skin. Hot water depletes your skin’s natural oils, leaving it feeling dry, tight and itchy. It’s best to stick to lukewarm showers (around 37℃) and limit yourself to one 5-10 minute shower per day.

Tip #3: Invest in Hydrating Skincare

As the winter chill sets in and you trade your bikini for a cosy knit, it may also be time to switch up your skincare routine. Our Hydration Heroes Super Set is like a big hug for your skin through the colder seasons, full of super-nourishing ingredients like Aloe Vera, Sodium Hyaluronate and Tasmanian Sea Kelp to restore moisture at a deeper level.

The perfect Coast to Coast winter skin routine looks a little like this:

Morning and night: Sweep the Ultra Soothing Hydra Tonic over freshly cleansed skin using a cotton pad. Apply 1-2 pumps of the Ultra Hydrating Repair Serum, followed by the Lightweight Moisture Lotion. Lightly smooth a small amount of Ultra Firming Eye Serum around the eye area.

Nightly boost: Layer on a small amount of Ultra Hydrating PM Repair Cream before bedtime.

Twice per week: Apply the Ultra Soothing White Clay Mask over the face and neck and remove after 10 minutes.

Here’s to banishing the winter blues and enjoying happy and hydrated skin all year round!
